Wakefield, West Yorkshire

Wakefield is a local government district of West Yorkshire and the 87th largest town in the European Union. It lies in between Leeds and Sheffield and involves the cities of Featherstone, Normanton, Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley.The city was settled on a hill earlier mentioned the river Calder and created up close to the meeting level of Northgate, Westgate and Kirkgate roads. Settlement in the location can be traced again to Saxon times and a church has been found dating back to this interval. In the 14th century, the church became known as the Cathedral Church of All Saints but it is now identified just as Wakefield Cathedral. The spire is the top in Yorkshire at 75 metres and it is the tallest creating in Wakefield.Wakefield is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 under the title of Wacafeld. In 1460, the popular Battle of Wakefield took location. It was throughout this battle that Richard of York was killed. The battle was fought in the area of Sandal Castle. The castlewas the scene of a lot more fighting in the 1640's when Parliamentary forces attacked.Wakefield has a wealthy mining history. Coal was mined in the place as early as the 12th century and the Miners Philanthropic Society was formed in the metropolis. In the 1980's there have been 21 pits but this decreased to 15 by the time of the 1984 strike. In 1994 there were only two collieries in the district. The Prince of Wales at Pontefract closed in 2002 and the only one left is now Kellingly at Knottingly.Coal was not the only sector to be big in Wakefield. Wool, metal, chemicals and glass all had their place. A industry appeared in the 13th century for the fabric and grain industries exactly where goods and raw components could be purchased and marketed. Slum housing created up in the area along with the major industry, but these days there are engineering and I.T. Industries and the slums have gone. It is now also has the headquarters of the West Yorkshire Police.
